Honest mirrors

It was not Shostakovich's business to make flaming speeches against windmill blades, but he argued subtly and precisely with the means of music, often sharper and clearer than many masters of verbiage. Those who wanted to listen understood. Those who do not want to hear do not understand. Until today. The year is 1967: 50 years of the Great Socialist October Revolution. What a disaster. This is the message of the "Seven Romances" after Alexander Blok, composed by Dmitri Shostakovich. Ophelia laments the violent, senseless death of her lover. Leaden hopelessness and dull monotony paralyse the modern city, and even in the final chord the music refuses to offer any solace. Is there a way out?

"Yes! We will play the Tchaikovsky Trio! This is one of the thousand things you should have done in your life! We're looking forward to it." (Maria Pflüger)
