„Rights for Children“

- the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as a choral theater project with children, young people and an actor

With "Rights for Children", director Alexander Weise brings the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to the stage with 16 children, young people and actor Andrei Tacu. The choral project takes the German ratification of the text of law 30 years ago as an opportunity to raise awareness anew of the rights for children and young people promised by the signatory states and to take a critical look at them. What value do the achievements of our civilization still have?

The production is based on the legal text of the convention itself, which is supplemented by the experiences and questions of the young performers, who tell of their very own reality. Thus, in Alexander Weise's work, the deliberately diverse chorus consists of individuals who become visible in their differences and yet act together in solidarity with the others. As a counterpoint to the demanding chorus of young voices, the actor Andrei Tacu questions the text from the distance of an adult - supposedly superior - perspective and contrasts the incorruptibility of the conventions presented by the children with the complexity of a complex discourse.

Stefano di Buduo's 360-degree projections place the actors in a global context, using images that depict our reality as well as illusions, utopias, and emotional worlds.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is the agreement of 196 states to date to observe standards in the protection of children. They are not an enforceable right, but merely serve as a promise. They were signed by the UN General Assembly on November 20, 1989, although not ratified by all countries. For this reason, the derniere of "Rights for Children" will take place on November 20, 2022, the anniversary of the signing.

The actor and director Alexander Weise has been working for several years on speech choruses for theater productions for Karin Henkel or Ulrich Rasche, among others. The productions "Die Räuber" and "Das große Heft", directed by Ulrich Rasche, speech choruses by Alexander Weise, were invited to the Theatertreffen. "Rights for Children" is his second directorial work after "Das Eddy Projekt", in which he again flanks the collaboration of a choir of young performers* with professional artists. His goal is to find the personal access of the performers to the texts, in order to let each individual become visible in the choir in the community.
