Zeitgeist

Ghassan Hammash | Ramal Ensemble

A dance show based on dance and improvised acting, with live music by the Ramal Ensemble. The piece sheds light on the daily life of an Arab woman living alone in exile and experiencing the more or less subtle hardships that life in Europe brings. Through improvisation, artistic innovation and extensive research, 'Zeitgeist' tells a story that explores the theme of unintentional racism, the cycle of abuse and also the potential for transformation.

Ramal Ensemble is a group of Syrian musicians that was founded in Damascus in 2011. Their arrangements and original compositions create interaction between Middle Eastern music and western classical music, combining authentic performances like in traditional oriental music and innovative playing techniques found in contemporary-modern music.
Ramal also cooperates with artists from other fields including dance and literature. The ensemble stands for musical diversity and openness as well as for musical influences from all cultures, which leaves room for improvisation and innovation.
