The Conversation

Maximilian Hanisch & Sarah Methner

Two performers follow the traces of modern surveillance technology. They reconstruct a forgotten conversation and, as in a criminal case, reassemble fragments of a crime scene into a narrative.

The more extensive the technical possibilities for digital mass surveillance become, the more potential there is for their misuse. Not only do we search the Internet, but the Internet searches us. Companies and states collect data and create personality profiles and predictions about our future actions. THE CONVERSATION shows how the process of forensic evaluation is taking on a life of its own and, in the chaos that is emerging, asks the question: is privacy private or a challenge for collective political action?

Maximilian Hanisch and Sarah Methner have been developing concepts and projects together in close collaboration since 2019. A particular interest for them lies in the appropriation of political material that is still little explored performatively. These include the resistant and revolutionary image Nike uses in its advertising campaigns, as well as the global history of prefabricated housing or the effects of modern surveillance on our society.
